Baseline study and Market study of « Girls and children working in mining » project for CAFOD and Centre OLAME

These studies take place in 4 regions of South kivu: Luhihi, Nyabibwe, Mulamba and Mubumbano.

The « Girls and children working in mining » project is funded by Caritas Australia for a period of 3 years (May 2021 – April 2024). This project aims to contribute to the protection of girls, children against abuse, child labor in mining areas and to help them reintegrate into the normal school system and / or recovery while strengthening the livelihoods of their parents or guardians.

Before starting the implementation of activities in the field, CAFOD and its partners first wanted to inform the project indicators and have a very good knowledge of the context and the baseline situation (baseline study) and know how to identify actions. specific and very appropriate (market research). Objectives and scope of the evaluation The evaluation has 3 parts, namely: the baseline study, the socioeconomic study of households, the study of the youth employment market.

I. Baseline study

– Make available information on the nature and extent of child labor in mines in South Kivu province; – Analyze the socio-economic situation of households in the target areas in relation to the determining factors of child labor; – Provide the project with the necessary elements to achieve the assigned objectives and define a baseline information base necessary for the final impact assessment.

II. Market research

– Obtain key information that will enable girls and young people to be better integrated into vocational training alternatives; – Identify employment opportunities for girls and children released from mines by addressing the demand in terms of employer needs, as well as self-employment opportunities; – Identify the most promising micro-enterprises options to offer to households and young girls on the basis of the constraints, opportunities identified and conditions required by activity; – Identify with state and non-state actors the challenges and opportunities encountered by micro- and small businesses in terms of access to financial and non-financial services – Make recommendations to ensure that the micro-enterprises created or strengthened are sustainable.
